Norigan
Species
Created by Melariel, the Norigans are a species characterized by tan skin, almond-shaped eyes, and unique natural pigmentation that resembles soft, intricate tattoos. In Norigan lore, these specific patterns are believed to be the Fingerprints of the Goddess. Their most defining feature is a single, prominent horn growing from the center of the forehead. Like the Hearthens, Norigans carve their clan history into this horn, though the origin of this shared tradition has been lost to the ages. Norigan society functions on a labyrinthine system of social credit called "The Etiquette." They are a deeply proud people who take offense easily, and reputation means everything to them. A Norigan's social class is carved on the front of their horn from the bottom up, while the rest of the horn displays clan history. When a reputation is severely damaged, the horn is cut at the proper segment. As it grows back, each new segment is subject to a merit study to judge if status has been regained. However, clan history truncated by a cut is never rewritten, meaning a single punishment damages not just an individual's reputation, but the standing of their entire clan.
Currently, the species is ideologically fractured, engaging in a cultural war. The majority remain raditionalists, known as Canyon-Keepers, who are deeply attached to their ancestral ways and reject modernization. Conversely, the Modernists, or Coast-Dwellers, have fully embraced progress. As modern metropolises expand across Melarielia, tensions are reaching a boiling point between the natives protecting their land and the settlers claiming territory acre by acre. The Canyon-Keepers inhabit the island's deep canyons, dressing in tribal attire similar to the Nihilims and living in cliff-hives carved directly into the rock face, accessible only by climbing, elevators, or wind-gliding. Tragically, these communities are shrinking as their youth abandon the repetitive drudgery of tribal life for the wonders of the civilized world.
The Civilized Norigans have adopted Sarin customs with zeal. They are often vain, obsessed with beauty and appearances. Their architecture reflects their mastery of magic; they build tall, decorated and immaculate cities on the coasts. These spires feature open walls to let the breeze flow through, creating a constant singing of wind chimes that is mere noise to outsiders but a complex language to the locals. On the roofs, wind and thunder collectors harness energy into the mana grid that powers their cities. Whether tribal or civilized, Norigans are naturally gifted with air and lightning magic. They use the air for gliding, leaping from canyon walls to ride thermals, which also makes them excellent mages on ships. They also utilize acoustic magic to throw their voices over miles or create zones of silence. On the battlefield, they are deadly, using air blades, shockwaves and lightning strikes. Those who possess the rare Thunder Mark are usually members of the highest caste of warrior mages.
Regardless of the faction, the status of men remains brutal. Because the rugged terrain of Melarielia makes physical labor difficult and the magical skills of the women make male labor largely redundant, men are treated as chattel slaves with zero freedom. They are mostly detained in mines to extract raw materials. While a select few are picked as breeding studs based on physical traits, they are returned to hard labor the moment their function is fulfilled.
